Lawrenceville is a city located along the Embarras River in southeast Illinois. Lawrenceville had a population of about 4,300 people at the time of the 2010 United States census. Lawrenceville currently serves as the county seat of Lawrence County.

The county in which Lawrenceville is located was established in 1821. Lawrence was formed from portions of both Crawford and Edwards counties. The county is named in honor of James Lawrence, an American naval officer who was killed in action during the War of 1812. Captain James Lawrence is credited with the famous last words “Don’t give up the ship.”

There are several things to see and do in the City of Lawrence. The county’s Arts Council is very active in the community, hosting many theater presentations aimed at entertaining and educating its audiences. The Lawrence County Arts Council also trains actors, directors and technicians. Individuals looking to explore the city will find there are plenty of things to see within the community.
