Located in southeast Illinois, Sumner is a small city situated in Lawrence County. As of 2010, Sumner has a population of about 1,000 people according to the United States Census Bureau.

Sumner is located in Lawrence County, the 67th largest county in Illinois. Lawrence County was formed in 1821 and is named in honor of James Lawrence, a hero of the War of 1812. The famous phrase “Don’t give up the ship” is credited to Captain James Lawrence. The naval officer uttered these last words after he was fatally wounded during the War of 1812.
